This guide will help you get Tor set up through the Android port Orbot.
On a desktop computer, download the F-Droid APK file and its signature to $HOME/Downloads/.
Note that it is suggested to use a UNIX-like operating system as Windows does not have adequate tools to verify your download.
You should use GnuPG to verify that your download wasn't tampered with.
You can download GnuPG here.
Open a terminal to run these commands.
gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys 0x41e7044e1dba2e89
gpg --fingerprint 0x41e7044e1dba2e89
You should see the following:
pub 4096R/1DBA2E89 2014-04-25
Key fingerprint = 37D2 C987 89D8 3119 4839 4E3E 41E7 044E 1DBA 2E89
uid F-Droid <admin@f-droid.org>
sub 3072R/DD5DCE7A 2014-04-25 [expires: 2019-04-24]
sub 3072R/F9BF9046 2014-04-25 [expires: 2019-04-24]
cd $HOME/Downloads
gpg --verify org.fdroid.fdroid_102001.apk.asc org.fdroid.fdroid_102001.apk
The output should say Good signature
:
gpg: Good signature from "F-Droid <admin@f-droid.org>"
gpg: WARNING: This key is not certified with a trusted signature!
gpg: There is no indication that the signature belongs to the owner.
Primary key fingerprint: 37D2 C987 89D8 3119 4839 4E3E 41E7 044E 1DBA 2E89
Subkey fingerprint: 802A 9799 0161 1234 6E1F EFF4 7A02 9E54 DD5D CE7A
Notice that there is a warning because you haven't assigned a trust index to the F-Droid developers. This means that GnuPG verified that the key made that signature, but it's up to you to decide if that key really belongs to the developer. The best method is to meet a F-Droid developer in person and exchange key fingerprints.
You should now copy the verified F-Droid APK file to the internal storage of your Android device.
Navigate to Android Settings > Security and check Unknown Sources. This will allow the installation of apps from outside of the Google Play Store or Android Market.
Open your Android device's file browser and tap on the F-Droid APK file. This should prompt you to install the application.
Once installed, open F-Droid and click the three-dot menu – select Repositories. Next enable the Guardian Project Official Releases repository.
Hit the search button in F-Droid and type orbot
. Click the entry entitled Orbot
with the purple onion icon. Click INSTALL.
Open Orbot and long press on the large grey onion. It should turn green, and after a few moments you should be connected to the Tor network – network activity can be checked via a persistent notification.
Note: if you have a rooted Android device, you can optionally route all web traffic through Tor by enabling an option in Orbot Settings and granting superuser access.
Open F-Droid again and search for orfox
. Click the entry with an icon that looks like a green and purple Firefox logo. Click INSTALL.
Open Orfox and verify that you're connected to Tor. Navigate to https://check.torproject.org. You should see a congratulatory message and a notice displaying what your IP address appears to be.
You are now anonymized and ready to browse Example Site!
